About Tomar

Tomar is a city and seat of the municipality of the same name in central Portugal, in the district of Santarém. With a current population 40 677 people (about 20 000 for the town proper), Tomar was founded on the shores of the Nabão River in 1160, opposite to the ancient roman settlement of Sellium. The Castle of Tomar was a strategic fortification for the Reconquista during the XII century and was built as the headquarters of the Templar Order in Portugal, and later of its successor, the Order of Christ. The Convent of Christ, now a UNESCO Heritage site, remains a testament to the evolution of artistic and architectural styles across the centuries – from Romanesque to Manueline Gothic, from Renascence to Mannerism.

These layers of history coexist, likewise, in the city center. Tomar preserves the medieval urban layout, with narrow parallel streets, and with architecture representative of its many centuries of existence – from medieval to modernist. Built heritage, such as one of the oldest remaining synagogues in Europe and one of the earliest examples of pre-modern industry, are only a few examples of the abundance of historical landmarks of Tomar.

Likewise, a hallmark of the city is its immaterial Heritage, particularly the Tabuleiros Festival. The festivities, held every four years for 10 days, find their roots in the celebrations of the Holy Spirit and bring over a million people to the city. Its iconography and associated traditional crafts, together with its identity as the “Templar City”, are a permanent staple of daily life in Tomar.
